There’s something going on every day at Willowdale Lawn Bowling Club. From leagues to jitneys, there’s an opportunity to bowl with others pretty much seven days a week.

So what is a jitney, you ask? It’s where members arrive at a specific time and a volunteer draw master puts teams together for that time period.

Depending ‚Äčon the number of bowlers, the games may be doubles or trebles (two people per team or three people per team).

A game is played, usually 12 or 14 ends, and scores are added up. It’s a great way to test your skills against others in a friendly, non-threatening way. And a great way to spend some time chatting and enjoying the day with others.

We will have two flights of our successful Sunday singles league in 2023. The first will run from the end of May until the end of July. The second will run from the beginning of August until early October.

Singles is a great way to hone your game. You and your partner play until one of you reaches 15 points.

The league was a lot of fun in 2022. All levels of bowlers are encouraged to join. Sign up if you’re interested.

Like singles, there will be two flights of the doubles league in 2023. The first will run from the end of May to the end of July. The second will run during August and September.

During the first flight, players have the option to choose who they will play with and establish their own teams. For those without a partner, arrangements will be made to pair up. There are also opportunities for spare players and alternates to register. Anyone is welcome. If you’re new, we’ll partner you with someone more experienced.

During the second flight, we will deliberately pair up less experienced bowlers with those who have more experience. That way, new bowlers can get involved in a league and play with someone from whom they can learn the intricacies of the game.

New for 2023 is Newbie Nite on Tuesday evenings. The purpose of this event is to give new bowlers a chance to learn about the various games we play: singles, doubles, trebles and 4-3-2-1. Newbies are matched with more experienced bowlers, who take the time to provide insight into the intricacies of each game.

This game is unique to lawn bowling. In groups of three or four participants per rink, players take turns rolling bowls to get close to the jack.

When everyone has rolled their bowls, the score is added up. The bowl closest to the jack earns four points. Second closest earns three and so on, to a single point. Ten points are available per end.

After four ends, the person with the highest score rotates to the next rink over, and so on, usually for a total of 12 ends during the evening. The beauty of the game is that even inexperienced bowlers have a chance to score points.

Back for a third season is our popular Skills & Drills program. This was designed for newer bowlers, but has helped bowlers at all levels hone and improve their game.

The evening begins with a series of drills that focus on specific aspects of the game. Groups of participants rotate quickly through the drills. The evening moves quickly, but there is lots of opportunity to learn along the way.

For the last half of the evening, a game is arranged. Depending on the number of participants, this could be trebles, doubles or even 4-3-2-1. It’s a great way to get some coaching and improve your game.

Saturday morning jitneys, sponsored by Canterbury Place Retirement Residence, are arranged on a per-weekend basis. Those who arrive before 10 a.m. will be put into teams to play a single 12-end game. Depending on the number of players, the game will mostly likely be doubles or trebles.

Jitneys are a social staple of lawn bowling. They’re always a good opportunity to play and chat with others. If you’re interested, please just show up before 10 a.m. and we’ll make sure to find you a team on which to play.
